The Beartooth Wildlife Management Area is a wildlife refuge and recreation area between Helena and Great Falls, Montana.
The area's main objectives are to maintain productive and diverse plant communities that provide sustenance and cover for elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep and provide opportunities for recreational activities like wildlife viewing, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and horseback riding.
The Wildlife Management Area is closed from the end of hunting season until May 15.
To get to the 35,173 acres of land, take exit I-15 at Wolf Creek and take the Missouri River Road east to Wolf Creek Bridge. Next, turn south on Beartooth Road and follow signs the rest of the way.
We took a winter stroll up Beartooth Rd. from the Departure Point Campground at Holter Lake. You can walk up to the entrance of the wildlife management area, which is closed in winter, but you still get beautiful views of the area, including Holter Lake.
