Rock City is a patch of land that is packed with hoodoos: tall, spindly structures formed within sedimentary rock by erosion. There are lots of fun pockets, spires, climbing walls, and natural mazes to explore at Rock City as well as the beautiful nature and wildlife of the Montana plains and the Two Medicine River in the canyon below.
Head to Valier, MT and when you reach town, turn north on Montana Avenue. Follow the dirt road for about 7 miles until you pass through a gate. The road/trail will curve left past the gate and end in a broad, flat parking area. There is no signage, designated trails or parking areas, so you're free to explore on your own.
Please keep in mind that these rock structures are naturally very fragile and took hundreds of years to form. Treat them kindly!
Super cool hidden gem! The pictures don't do it justice! I took our 5 year old but I would not take younger children as there are many cliffs. There are plenty of rocks to climb on but there are also trails leading down to the river canyon. Be sure to have bear spray! To get there, drive north towards Cut Bank out of Valier on Cut Bank Highway and as the road turns west, continue north(straight) on gravel road past Bullhead Rd. and then Dean Rd. and eventually onto a dirt road. You will eventually get to a fence cut out and then reach the parking area. A higher clearance vehicle is highly recommended as this is a pretty rugged road but well worth the drive!

This place is crazy cool! It’s large “city” made of hoodoos made our jaw drop when we first drove up to it! And the way it’s situated above the Two Medicine river is pretty epic. I’ve heard there can be lots of rattlesnakes here in summer, so we’ve only come here during early spring and winter. I agree that this is a location where kids should be under strict adult supervision. There are tall cliffs that line the whole edge of hoodoos that run parallel to the river, and the huge tops of the ancient hoodoos can be fragile. Also the dirt/mud road through a farmers field is the hardest part about getting here! Please don’t damage any of the rock formations so that others can marvel at this incredible spot for hundreds of years to come!

This is a really interesting find in the middle of nowhere Montana. It is other worldly and really worth the trip. The access can be muddy and is sure to tick off the private land owners in the area so be respectful while accessing the area. I wouldn't call this "little kid" friendly as there are many places to fall off a cliff or get poked by cacti but older kids will love it.
