Pine Creek Lake Trail is a popular path near Livingston, Montana, in the Pine Creek Recreation Area. The steady elevation gain (and loss) can be a brutal challenge for some of even the most well-seasoned hikers.
You can hike to the waterfall and turn back, and no one would hold it against you. However, if you venture up, I suggest preparing with appropriate attire and lots of calories and water.
You might find the water crossings too high to comfortably cross, meaning the top will have to wait for a better time of year. It can take about 5 hours to summit this trail, so be aware of your ability and the ability of your group – especially children. Lots of folks bring kids on this hike, but be mindful of the difficulty.
I recommend sunscreen, bug spray, hiking poles, snowshoes if needed, thick socks, lots of refreshments, waterproof shoes, bear repellant and a can-do attitude!
